With Thanksgiving arriving late this year, the Wading River Fire Department has less time to run its Christmas Holiday “Stuff-A-Bus” food drive campaign. Over the years, many Wading River residents participated in this annual event - all to great success. Last year, the bus was so filled with food that there was no room anywhere, even in the aisle. This year, the Fire Department has received letters seeking food deliveries from no less than seven local churches. Department President Mike Hammer said, “After the Thanksgiving deliveries, the food pantries are all very low.” Once again, a bus has been donated from the First Student bus company and it sits in the parking lot at the Headquarters of the Fire Department on North Country Road. The non-perishable foods and canned goods that will be collected outside of the King Kullen supermarket, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, will be delivering to these seven area churches and food banks on Sunday, January 5, 2020. Residents can, of course, place donations into the school bus, parked at the fire house.
Captain, Thomas Whelan, will be running the food drive this year, with help from the volunteer firefighters, EMS rescue personnel, the Auxiliary and the local Boy Scout Troop 94. Additionally, residents can drop off food at either Defined Health and Fitness Gym, located next to the Ace Hardware store in the King Kullen shopping center, or at R and K Precision Autoworks, located at 3241 Sound Ave., before you get to Roanoke Ave. Both will have a collection box available. All the fire department members thank the residents for their patience and kind words at the entrance to King Kullen. Canned goods will be collected at the bus right up to January 5.
