On Friday September 23, 2022 while WRFD was providing standby EMS coverage for the Shoreham-Wading River High School Varsity Football game, WRFD was activated for an EMS alarm. WRFD Ambulance 6-3-17 left the standby to assist the sick person. Shortly thereafter was activated for a Motor Vehicle accident on NYS 25-A and Hulse Landing Road. Suffolk County Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) dispatchers provided information to 3rd Assistant Chief Tom Whelan that the incident involved a car into a pole with wires down. The WRFD 1st Responder and unit 6-3-11 responded to the call. Chief Whalen requested FRES to activate Rocky Point FD for 1 Ambulance to the scene.
The driver of the vehicle stated that she had attempted to avoid hitting a deer and lost control, causing her to hit the pole and the vehicle to roll onto its side. Due to the force of the impact the windshield was heavily damaged and the use of her seat belt, the driver was able to crawl out of the vehicle before FD personnel arrived on scene.
The WRFD 1st Responder evaluated the driver and she was transported to the hospital by a RPFD Ambulance.
The scene was turned over to the Riverhead town police.
